Purpose Statement
Midewigaaning Bemohsayaan (Walking the Length of the Lodge) is a living continuation of the Midewin’s Seven Fires Prophecy—a sacred commitment to retrace, remember, and rekindle the ancestral pathways left behind on a spiritual journey. This initiative began in 2015 in support of Midewin Grandmother Josephine Mandamin and her historic Migration Water Walk along the Great Midewin Migration Trail, stretching from Matane, Quebec to Duluth, Minnesota. As a Fourth Degree Midewin, I—Abitoonse Giisis (Little Half Moon), also known as Mike Nadjiwon—have since carried this work forward by walking the eastern seaboard of Turtle Island, the place from which the Midewin are known, in our oral history, to have originally migrated. As Midewin Elder and scholar Jim Dumont observed in 2015: “We don’t know much of the Midewin migration.” That truth continues to guide our journey—with reverence and urgency. Through sacred walks, ceremonial offerings, and the collection of oral histories from knowledge keepers, Midewigaaning Bemohsayaan is becoming part of a living archive—a spiritual and cultural reawakening rooted in place-based memory. Our purpose is clear:
To reconnect with the stories held within the land.
To honor the sacred teachings of our ancestors.
And to ensure that the pathways of the Midewin remain alive for future generations.
